Film & TV Sporting Themes

Film & TV Sporting Themes album design.

For this release I took inspiration from classic Olympic Games design, more specifically a nod towards Otl Aicher's work on the 1972 Munich Olympics. Designing my own pictograms to represent the sporting themes included on this album, using a vibrant but limited colour palette throughout to create split visuals between track and field sports, and with the use of geometric lines found on the grass pitches or astro turfs of these events to give the layout a modernist, graphical feel to it.

The Music of Hans Zimmer - The Definitive Collection - box set design

London Music Works & The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra Perform The Music of Hans Zimmer - The Definitive Collection

Unlike the Film Music of Hans Zimmer Volume 2, this box set required more than one main image to represent the films featured in the compilation. I wanted all 6 discs to have their own cover, each representing a milestone film that Zimmer's music is most associated with. I wanted them to look cinematic, to capture the essence of the movies and appeal to the worlds and scenes in which they are set. And I also wanted these covers to work as a series, to look as though they belonged together as part of the collection. Difficult, as the The Dark Knight doesn't really match the era of Gladiator or the quirky mood of Pirates!

The thread, I decided, would be the habitats and landscapes that the film scores occupy; the stratosphere of Man of Steel, the turbulent race tracks of Rush, the folding cityscapes of Inception, the high seas of Pirates of the Caribbean series, the nocturnal nightmares of The Dark Knight Trilogy and the reflective wheat fields of Gladiator.

A mini-site was also designed for this release, with downloadable sleeve notes and wallpapers: definitivehanszimmer.com

Frank - Original Film Soundtrack - album design

Album artwork for Frank. I had the pleasure of working on the design and layout for the soundtrack to Lenny Abrahamson's film, which stars Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Scoot McNairy and Michael Fassbender.

The album features music and songs by Stephen Rennicks and the "Soronprfbs", a fictional band within the film, led by Fassbender as the eccentric lead singer in a papier-mâché head.

Presenting the packaging in a digipak format was intentional, treating the soundtrack more like something a band or artist would release. While bright colours and quirky stills were used throughout to convey the fun and eccentric nature of the film.

The Music of John Barry - The Definitive Collection

Above is the finish product for a box set containing 6 discs worth of iconic themes and scores from one of Hollywood's greatest composers, John Barry. A collection containing not just pieces of music, but memorable soundscapes from classics like Zulu, Midnight Cowboy, The Ipcress File, The Persuaders, Out Of Africa, Raise The Titanic, Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice... to name but a few.

Many of the films and their accompanying arrangements conjure up pictures of sweeping, moody landscapes and exceptional contours. With this being the case, a lot of John Barry albums and tributes take on this visual theme (see 'The Beyondness of Things'). So for this release I wanted to relate the artwork in a way that wouldn't just feel like repetition and would standout from the products already out there, whilst maintaining the visual relationship common among his work.

In order to do this the design had to take on a modern style, with the use of white space over and around the imagery. The result is a clean, consistent identity, characterised by the way the typography and layout has as much of an impact as the landscapes themselves.
